The Metropolitan Museum of Art has canceled a planned exhibition centered on fashion designer John Galliano that was set to coincide with the 2027 Met Gala, following mounting criticism over his history of antisemitic and racist remarks. The decision was announced Monday in a joint statement by the museum and Galliano. It came after many people contacted the Met to complain about the planned exhibition, including New York City Council spokesperson Julia Mann. Galliano was once at the pinnacle of the fashion world before a series of antisemitic and racist comments he made in 2010 and 2011 were captured on video and went viral. He was later convicted in France in an antisemitism case.
