REPORT — NATO ALLIES FOILED RUSSIAN UNDERSEA CABLE OPERATION: British, Norwegian and U.S. forces tracked and confronted Russian submarines and deep-sea submersibles near Svalbard this spring after discovering an exercise simulating the deployment of technology designed to disable critical undersea cables while obscuring who carried out the attack, Reuters reports. Western officials said Russia's secretive GUGI undersea warfare directorate was behind the operation. No cables were damaged, and NATO forces prevented the Russians from completing the exercise before the vessels left the area.
