🚗 NEW JERSEY FINES GEICO $1.2 MILLION OVER IMPROPER AUTO INSURANCE CHARGES: New Jersey's Department of Banking and Insurance announced Tuesday that GEICO and its affiliates paid a $1.2 million penalty after regulators found more than $10.5 million in improper auto insurance charges affecting more than 15,000 policyholders. The department cited rates higher than it had approved, improper policy cancellations, missing language on nonrenewal notices, and failure to inform owners of total-loss vehicles of their rights. The $10.5 million was returned to policyholders, with GEICO beginning refunds during the investigation. A GEICO spokesman said the company has acted on the department's recommendations and recently lowered New Jersey rates.
