Drivers caught speeding through active work zones on Metropolitan Transportation Authority bridges and tunnels will begin receiving fines in the mail starting Tuesday, ending a summer-long warning period. The MTA said vehicles recorded traveling more than 10 mph above the posted speed limit in designated construction areas will be subject to a notice of liability. Fines start at $50 for a first offense, rise to $75 for a second offense within 18 months, and reach $100 for additional violations in that same window. Late fees may also apply. The agency launched the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement program on June 30 with warning notices only. Officials said more than 15,000 warnings were mailed and cameras were used in about 200 work zones. Tens of thousands of vehicles were recorded exceeding the 10 mph threshold.
