The U.S. Army is reportedly moving forward with a program worth up to $2.2 billion to deploy nuclear microreactors at five initial bases: Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Fort Hood, Texas; Fort Benning, Georgia; and Fort Drum, New York. The reactors are designed to provide secure, reliable power even if the commercial electric grid is disrupted. Under President Trump's 2025 executive order, the Army is targeting September 2028 for its first Army-regulated reactor to begin operating, with more than 20 microreactors ultimately expected across U.S. military installations.
