Israel is demanding that the United Nations retract a tribute to Imad Yousif El Samhouri, a former UNRWA teacher and school principal whom Israeli officials and UN critics now accuse of being a Hamas commander. The Israeli Foreign Ministry said U.N. leaders honored El Samhouri at a June 8 ceremony and argued that newly publicized evidence shows he had ties to Hamas. It called on the U.N. to withdraw the tribute and address how an alleged Hamas operative was able to serve in UNRWA schools.
