9/11: Captain Rick Thornton was four hours into his shift aboard the NY Waterway ferry Henry Hudson when he saw smoke rising from the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Speaking to the New York Post, Thornton recalled immediately realizing the city was under attack and ordering his crew toward Lower Manhattan to begin evacuating people. The Henry Hudson made 20 trips that day, carrying thousands of people away from Manhattan. Thornton estimated his ferry transported about 8,000 people in total during the evacuation.
