E-ZPass users who mount their transponder in the upper-right corner of the windshield instead of the center could be paying more at Port Authority of New York and New Jersey crossings according to a new report. If the transponder isn't scanned properly, drivers are charged a "mid-tier" toll-$18.72 for a standard two-axle vehicle-compared to $14.06 with a properly scanned E-ZPass or $22.38 for Toll-by-Mail. The Port Authority says about 9% of crossings are billed at the higher mid-tier rate because unread transponders require manual verification.
