South African jurist Navi Pillay, who chaired a United Nations commission that accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, a decision likely to intensify debate over the international body’s treatment of Israel and the credibility of its accusations against the Jewish state. The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced Friday that Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, 85, was being honored for her efforts to promote peace and international law, particularly her role in advancing accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. The committee praised her legal career, which included serving as UN high commissioner for human rights and as a judge at international tribunals.
