NASA has officially opened the Flight Dynamics Research Facility at its Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, marking the agency's first major new wind tunnel in more than 40 years. The modern 25,000-square-foot facility features an advanced vertical wind tunnel that combines and upgrades the capabilities of two historic Langley tunnels, enabling free-flight and mounted testing of scale models. It will support critical research into aircraft safety, experimental X-planes, drones, and spacecraft technologies, including atmospheric re-entry vehicles for future exploration missions.
