*The Battle of Cable Street:* Today marks the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street. On 4 October 1936, Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts attempted to march through London's East End to intimidate its Jewish community. Jewish residents, Irish dockers, trade unionists and other neighbours built barricades and stopped them. Today's commemorations brought a bitter contrast. Jewish marchers - including descendants of those who stood against Mosley - and their allies gathered to honour that legacy. Counter protesters chanted “Zionism is fascism” and “Zionists are not welcome here”. A Jewish man whose grandfather stood against Mosley's fascists at Cable Street said he was punched and kicked during the march - at an event meant to honour resistance to antisemitism. For British Jews, being told we are unwelcome because we support Israel is a disgrace. To truly honour those who stood against Jew-hatred 90 years ago, we must confront it today.
