A LIFE OF TORAH: HARAV SHACH ZT"L 🕯️ Tonight, 16 Cheshvan, is the yahrzeit of HaRav Elazar Menachem Man Shach, Rosh Yeshivas Ponevezh and leader of the Litvish yeshiva world for some three decades. Born in Lithuania in 1899, he was a teenage bochur in Slabodka when World War I broke out and the yeshiva scattered. He became a refugee, moving from town to town, and for a long stretch did not know where his parents were. Wherever he landed, he found the shul and kept learning. He slept on shul benches for months and ate whatever kind people brought him. It is told that he hid in a shul attic with only a Gemara Yevamos and a sefer of Rabbi Akiva Eiger. He owned one shirt, so every Thursday night he washed it on the roof of the beis medrash and stood in the freezing cold until it dried a little, to honor Shabbos with a clean shirt.
