RAV HAI GAON - HOSHANAH RABBAH A remarkable account recorded in Sefer Chassidim describes how, around 1,000 years ago, in the early 11th century, Rav Hai Gaon would travel each year from Bavel to Yerushalayim for Sukkos to fulfill the minhag of Aliyah LeRegel. On Hoshana Rabbah, a great gathering would take place on Har HaZeisim, according to accounts at the traditional site of the Sreifas HaParah, overlooking the Makom HaMikdash. The procession itself was extraordinary. Kohanim dressed in fine garments and cloaks walked in front of Rav Hai Gaon. Rav Hai walked approximately 100 amos behind them, while the rest of the people followed another 100 amos behind Rav Hai, leaving him walking alone between the two groups. They would make seven hakafos around Har HaZeisim, reciting special mizmorim and tefillos.
