AFTER 78 YEARS, THE ALTALENA HAS BEEN FOUND: Journalist Amit Segal reports that at 12:30 AM on August 24, 2026, the Altalena was located intact at a depth of 503 meters, west of Israel's coast, during a complex maritime search operation. The Altalena was an Irgun arms ship that arrived off the coast of Israel shortly after the establishment of the state. On June 22, 1948, it was shelled by the IDF on the orders of Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion amid a bitter confrontation over the weapons aboard. Sixteen Irgun members and three IDF soldiers were killed. Menachem Begin, leader of the Irgun, famously ordered his men not to return fire against fellow Jews, determined to prevent the confrontation from descending into civil war.
