GAL'ON FORTRESS REOPENS: A 3,200-year-old fortress from the days of the Shoftim has reopened to visitors in Guvrin Forest, in the Judean Lowlands near Beit Guvrin. The square fortress once guarded the main road from the coastal plain into the hills. Archaeologists date it to the mid-12th century BCE. KKL-JNF and the Israel Antiquities Authority invested about 400,000 shekels in conserving its ancient walls and rooms, adding an accessible path, a picnic area and new signs. The surrounding Guvrin Forest stretches across about 4,400 dunams, with pine trees and Mediterranean woodland. The renewed path gives visitors a closer look at the remains of the ancient stronghold.
