EACH MORNING, HIS FAMILY WAITED TO SEE HIM RETURN SAFELY: HaRav Yosef Yitzchak "Yoshya" Rivlin was one of the pioneers who dared to build Jewish life beyond the walls of the Old City of Yerushalayim. When he helped establish Nachalat Shiva in 1869, spending the night outside the protection of the Old City walls was still considered dangerous. Rivlin slept in the new neighborhood while his family remained inside the Old City. Each morning, they waited anxiously for his safe return. Rivlin went on to help establish 13 neighborhoods in Yerushalayim, including Mea Shearim, Even Yisrael, Mishkenot Yisrael, Mazkeret Moshe and Ohel Moshe, earning him the nickname "Shtetlmacher," the town-builder.
