HOW ISRAEL’S ELECTION WORKS: Unlike America, Israelis don’t vote directly for prime minister. Instead, they vote for political parties competing for 120 seats in the Knesset. Parties must receive at least 3.25% of the vote to win seats. To form a government, a leader must assemble a coalition controlling at least 61 seats. This means even the party winning the most seats isn’t guaranteed to lead the country, as smaller parties, including Shas and UTJ, can hold the balance of power.
