10 HOURS TO NOWHERE: Miami-Bound El Al Flight Turns Around Mid-Journey After Technical Malfunction Passengers aboard an El Al flight from Tel Aviv to Miami faced an extraordinary journey Tuesday after their plane developed an unexpected technical malfunction several hours into the transatlantic flight, forcing the aircraft to reverse course and head all the way back to Israel. Flight LY017 had departed Ben Gurion Airport for Miami before the problem was discovered while the aircraft was already well into its journey. Rather than continuing across the Atlantic, the crew made the decision to turn around and return to Ben Gurion Airport. The reversal meant that, assuming the aircraft returned directly to Tel Aviv without making an intermediate landing, passengers would spend more than 10 consecutive hours aboard the plane — only to end up back at the airport from which they had departed. Flight information indicated that LY017 was being operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, the long-haul aircraft El Al commonly uses on the Tel Aviv-Miami route. Reports indicated that the flight had already spent approximately four-and-a-half hours in the air when the decision was made to abandon the trip to Miami. The flight itself had also departed later than originally scheduled. El Al did not publicly disclose the precise nature of the technical problem, describing it only as an unexpected malfunction. There was no indication that passengers or crew members were in immediate danger. The airline said that once the passengers arrived back in Israel, they would be allowed to choose whether to continue their journey on another flight or cancel their travel plans and receive their money back. “We apologize to passengers for the inconvenience and emphasize that El Al places the safety and security of its passengers and crew at the top of its priorities,” the airline said. The disruption came just one day after another Israeli carrier experienced an in-flight technical problem. An Israir charter flight was forced to return to Ben Gurion Airport after a malfunction was discovered shortly after departure. In that incident, the aircraft had been airborne for only about 40 minutes before turning around and returning safely to Israel.
