SpaceX and Qualcomm are building a dual-network that uses city towers for high-speed 5G and switches to Starlink satellites in remote areas to completely eliminate dead zones. While the exact price of the hardware deal is a secret, SpaceX spent $17 billion just on wireless licenses, and building a nationwide tower network can cost up to $100 billion over time. They haven't announced final phone plan prices yet—though they are testing a $47 a month home-and-mobile bundle to undercut traditional carriers—but Wall Street analysts estimate this massive gamble could eventually bring in $25 billion in yearly revenue with up to $18 billion of that being pure profit. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile are panicking over SpaceX's new network and have teamed up to aggressively lobby the FCC to block Starlink Mobile. Fearing massive losses, the "Big Three" carriers have formed a joint defensive alliance and are trying to convince regulators that SpaceX's signals will cause severe interference for 300 million existing phone users. They are demanding the FCC impose massive 250-mile "buffer zones" around standard cell towers—restrictions SpaceX fires back are completely "outdated" and intentionally designed to stifle competition and kill off Starlink Mobile before it can ever launch.
