A massive fire broke out late Friday night, shortly before midnight, near the resting place of Rabbi Shneior Zalman of Liadi, the founder of Chabad-Lubavitch and author of the Tanya, in the town of Haditch, Ukraine. The blaze caused catastrophic damage to the site, including the main synagogue, with losses estimated in the millions of dollars. The central building was virtually destroyed. Several Torah scrolls were rescued by guests and local staff, while the kitchen and hospitality facilities also sustained significant damage. Authorities believe the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit, though all possibilities remain under investigation. Thankfully, no one was injured. Rabbi Shneur Deutsch, the Chabad emissary in Haditch, and his family are safe.
