*🇺🇸-Verizon Faces Scrutiny Over Jack Smith Subpoenas* Senate Republicans are pressing Verizon for failing to notify GOP lawmakers that their phone toll records were subpoenaed in former Special Counsel Jack Smith’s “Arctic Frost” probe into 2020 election activities. A May 2023 subpoena led Verizon to turn over metadata for at least 10 Republican members of Congress. The company complied with a nondisclosure order but did not alert the Senate Sergeant at Arms, despite a contract requiring it for Senate lines. Verizon later cited inadequate systems at the time and human error in omitting the subpoena from a 2023 response to Sen. Chuck Grassley. In a July 31 letter to CEO Daniel Schulman, Grassley and colleagues demanded explanations by August 13. Verizon has since strengthened its review and notification procedures.
