*🇺🇸-Trump Lifts Some Beef Tariffs As Ranchers Push Back* President Trump signed a proclamation this week allowing up to 300,000 metric tons of imported lean beef trimmings into the U.S. with no above-quota tariff for 90 days. The extra quota starts September 1 and is capped at 100,000 tons a month. The White House says the meat is meant for ground beef and that suppliers committed to selling it about 25 percent below current market prices. Trump framed it as relief for grocery shoppers while the U.S. cattle herd rebuilds after years of tight supply. American ranchers and several Republican lawmakers from cattle country immediately objected. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association said flooding the market with cheaper foreign product will not help rebuild the domestic herd. Sen. Tim Sheehy of Montana said he had advised Trump against it and warned it would further harm ranchers. Sens. Deb Fischer and Pete Ricketts of Nebraska, plus lawmakers from the Dakotas, Kentucky, and other ag states, said lower prices should not come at the expense of U.S. producers. Trump’s response: families want cheaper beef, and that is what voters want. The fight is now grocery prices versus ranch-country support, with midterms weeks away.
