Federal Officials Investigate Cyber Attacks on US Water Systems Federal officials are probing major coordinated cyber attacks that targeted water systems across multiple states in the United States. The campaign struck more than thirty community water facilities in Minnesota during late July and has since been linked to incidents in at least six additional states. Attackers focused on programmable logic controllers that manage essential water operations. In several cases this caused temporary loss of remote monitoring and control. Operators shifted to manual processes to maintain service. Some systems issued boil water notices yet authorities reported no contamination of drinking water supplies. Preliminary findings from investigators suggest possible involvement by Iranian affiliated groups amid ongoing regional tensions. Official attribution remains incomplete and under active review. President Trump has publicly disputed the Iran assessment. The FBI along with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency have released urgent advisories.
