*🇬🇷-Greece is set to approve a €3 billion air defense deal with Israel, known as the "Achilles Shield" program* The Greek parliament is expected to give final approval this week to the procurement plan, which would create a multilayered air defense network to protect the country against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, drones and aircraft. The system centers on three Israeli technologies: Rafael's David's Sling and SPYDER systems, and IAI's Barak MX. ELTA Systems, an IAI subsidiary, would supply radars to link the interceptors into one integrated network. Tomer, Israel's state owned rocket motor manufacturer, would also benefit as a supplier for the SPYDER and Barak MX missiles. David's Sling, developed jointly by Rafael and RTX, targets medium and long range threats and has already seen combat use, including during Israel's recent conflict with Iran. SPYDER handles short to medium range aerial threats, while Barak MX offers layered protection against aircraft, drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. This deal builds on a decade of deepening defense cooperation between Israel and Greece, including joint exercises, intelligence sharing and an Elbit Systems run pilot training center for the Hellenic Air Force. Cyprus is also part of this expanding security network, holding trilateral drills with Israel and Greece and buying its own Barak MX systems. The Achilles Shield program follows an April agreement in which Greece signed a $750 million contract with Elbit Systems for PULS rocket launchers, part of a broader push to modernize its military.
