*đ-Major Economies Under Pressure As Debt And Deficits Keep Climbing* CNBCâs Steve Sedgwick is reporting that the worldâs biggest economies are facing growing strain from rising government debt and wide fiscal deficits. The U.S. debt pile has now topped $40 trillion. Long-term Treasury yields have jumped, and Washington recently expanded bond buybacks to try to keep borrowing costs from running away. The same pressure is showing up elsewhere. Japanâs borrowing costs are near multi-decade highs. Even Germany, long seen as the fiscal conservative, has seen yields climb as spending rises. The squeeze is simple. Old cheap debt is being refinanced at higher rates. Interest payments are eating a bigger share of budgets. Aging populations, defense spending, and healthcare costs are adding more pressure on top of that. This is not a faraway Wall Street story. Higher government borrowing costs can feed into mortgage rates, credit cards, small-business loans, and what cities and states pay to fund schools, roads, and public services. No crash is being declared. The warning is that the room to keep borrowing this way is getting smaller.
