The FCC is considering a request to loosen federal restrictions on political robocalls ahead of November’s midterm elections, potentially allowing campaigns and political groups to make unsolicited calls to cellphones using prerecorded or AI-generated voices, the Associated Press reports.
Current rules generally require prior consent before automated or prerecorded calls can be made to cellphones. If the request is approved, voters could face a major increase in political robocalls, including calls generated using artificial intelligence, during the final weeks of the midterm campaign.
