Five people, including three U.S. Postal Service carriers in Houston, have been federally charged in an alleged scheme that prosecutors say involved stealing and selling more than $23 million in checks over nearly six years.
Investigators say postal workers were recruited to remove checks from the mail, which were then advertised and sold through an encrypted Telegram group. The largest check cited in the indictment was allegedly worth $1.5 million.
