NATO forces detected Russian submarines and deep-sea submersibles training near Svalbard this spring to deploy technology capable of disabling critical undersea cables linking the Arctic archipelago to mainland Norway, Reuters reports.
Two Western officials said Russia’s secretive GUGI undersea warfare directorate was behind the operation. British, Norwegian and U.S. forces tracked and confronted the vessels, preventing them from completing the exercise before they eventually left the area.
