A military judge has ruled that confessions made by 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed to FBI agents at Guantánamo Bay in 2007 were not voluntary and cannot be used against him at trial, dealing a major blow to the prosecution’s case.
The judge found that the FBI interrogations were essentially a continuation of the harsh treatment Mohammed had previously faced in CIA custody. Prosecutors have described the 2007 statements as some of their most important evidence. His trial was set this week to begin in June 2028, but an appeal of Friday’s ruling could cause further delays.
