Mayor Zohran Mamdani has ordered police brass and City Hall officials to come up with a policy change for the NYPD's Strategic Response Group, the department's main counterterror unit, the New York Post reports. Mamdani had campaigned on scrapping it, but the effort was shelved.
The scramble began after congresswoman-elect Darializa Avila Chevalier, whom Mamdani endorsed, called for the unit to be disbanded. "It wasn't really a priority," one source said. "It was on the backburner." An announcement is expected "pretty soon," possibly as early as next week.
