Icelandic voters rejected a proposal to restart negotiations to join the European Union, with 52.8% voting against and 47.2% in favor. More than 82% of eligible voters participated in Saturday’s referendum, with Reykjavik the only area where a majority supported restarting the talks.
Opponents focused heavily on protecting Iceland’s fishing industry and maintaining national control, while supporters argued that closer ties with Europe could provide greater economic stability and security.
