*END OF AN ERA:* The New York City Council voted 40-7 Thursday to ban horse-drawn carriage rides, ending a tradition dating back more than 150 years. The ban will take effect June 1, 2028, Reuters reports.
The legislation follows the death of an 18-year-old tourist who was thrown from a runaway carriage in June. The measure also requires the city to develop a transition plan for carriage drivers and owners, while the drivers’ union is planning a legal challenge.
