Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to push President Trump during this week’s Washington summit to stop U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, invoking Beijing’s interpretation of a 1982 U.S.-China communiqué, according to Reuters.
Beijing is also seeking a halt to deliveries of weapons Taiwan has already purchased. Meanwhile, a proposed new U.S. arms package for Taiwan worth roughly $14 billion remains on hold, with Trump previously describing the package as a “very good negotiating chip” in talks with China.
