Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says his government has spent the past year preparing for the remote possibility of U.S. military action against Canada amid President Trump’s repeated threats to make Canada the 51st state, according to The New York Times.
Carney said Canada is working to reduce its dependence on the U.S., including reconsidering its planned purchase of 88 F-35 fighter jets and expanding economic ties elsewhere. Despite tensions, he said he remains in frequent contact with Trump and believes a new trade agreement remains possible.
