Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi says his government intends to dismantle Iran-backed militias as independent armed groups and bring their weapons under state control by June 30, 2027, according to The New York Times.
Under the proposed timeline, the militias would first observe a 90-day halt in attacks while U.S. forces refrain from striking them, after which the groups would begin surrendering their weapons. Al-Zaidi acknowledged significant resistance to the plan, but called bringing weapons under government authority “a necessity.”
