A New Mexico judge has ordered Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, to pay a staggering $25 billion after a jury found the company misled users about their data privacy, Reuters reports. The case stems from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which data from up to 87 million Facebook users was improperly harvested by a political consulting firm that worked with President Trump's 2016 campaign. The jury found more than 43 million violations of New Mexico consumer protection laws. Meta is expected to appeal.
