The Pentagon is considering a major reduction in the U.S. military presence in Europe, potentially withdrawing roughly one-third of the approximately 80,000 American troops stationed there, NBC News reports. Some proposals call for cuts of up to 40,000 troops.
The review could also lead to the removal of U.S. aircraft, warships and weapons, potentially affecting forces in Germany, Spain and Italy. No final decision has been made, with recommendations expected in November.
