The U.S. State Department is considering new rules that would require parents applying for a passport for their child to provide proof of their own U.S. citizenship or immigration status, as part of President Trump’s latest effort to restrict birthright citizenship.
Under the draft guidance, parents could be required to submit documents such as a U.S. passport, birth certificate, green card or I-94 form. Currently, parents of children born in the U.S. generally need to prove parentage and provide photo identification, but are not required to submit documentation proving their own citizenship status.
