Israel is preventing thousands of Palestinians who were vetted for a planned new Gaza police force from leaving the Strip to undergo training in Egypt, according to officials involved in the initiative. Some 16,500 people have been approved out of roughly 283,000 applicants for the police force expected to operate under Gaza’s planned technocratic government, but they still require Israeli approval to leave Gaza for training.
