European satellite companies are accelerating efforts to develop alternatives to Elon Musk’s Starlink after restrictions on the service temporarily disrupted Ukrainian military drone operations, Axios reports.
Finnish companies ICEYE and Nokia have reached an agreement with Ukraine’s Defense Ministry to explore developing an independent satellite communications network, with the first satellites expected to launch in 2028. Meanwhile, France-based Eutelsat says its satellite services are already available in Ukraine and can support drone operations, potentially reducing Ukraine’s dependence on Starlink.
