New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin have reached a deal to ban the city's horse-drawn carriage industry, with the ban set to take effect in June 2028. The City Council is scheduled to vote on the legislation October 22, and more than half its members already support it, POLITICO reports. The legislation would also establish a job transition program for carriage drivers, while requiring the city to consider financial compensation for carriage owners. The Transport Workers Union strongly opposes the deal, warning that hundreds of workers could lose their livelihoods without meaningful financial assistance.
