Oman has rejected an Iranian proposal to jointly charge commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, despite Tehran previously suggesting that such an arrangement was being developed, the NYP reports.
Muscat reportedly determined that collecting fees from vessels, even on a voluntary basis, for environmental and security services would violate international law, and stepped away from the proposal amid pressure from the U.S. and Gulf states. A U.S. official said the terms of any potential revenue-sharing arrangement had also never been finalized.
