Israel was prepared to shoot down Flydubai Flight 1073, carrying more than 150 Israelis, if authorities determined the aircraft had been hijacked and it continued toward Israel, according to CBS News.
After the Omani co-pilot stabbed the captain and the Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight suddenly descended 14,000 feet, the IAF attempted to establish contact with the cockpit but received no response. Under Israel’s procedures for a potential 9/11-style attack, fighter jets would inspect the aircraft and attempt communication before Prime Minister Netanyahu could ultimately authorize it to be shot down if it posed an imminent threat.
