Serbia’s longtime leader Aleksandar Vucic has conceded defeat in Sunday’s parliamentary elections to a student-led opposition movement, marking a stunning political shift after 14 years of his party’s rule.
The election followed nearly two years of massive student protests sparked by a deadly railway station collapse that killed 16 people and fueled accusations of government corruption. Voter turnout was unusually high, with long lines at polling stations across the country, as the student-backed movement challenged Vucic’s grip on power.
