Sri Lanka says it has no immediate plans to assist 19 Iranian oil tankers stranded for months in international waters off its coast, despite growing shortages of food, drinking water and fuel, AP reports. The vessels are anchored approximately 24 nautical miles from Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan officials say they are prioritizing national interests, citing fears that companies providing supplies to the Iranian vessels could face secondary U.S. sanctions. The ships have reportedly been stranded since the U.S. reinstated its naval blockade against Iran.
