Iran, China and private Israeli firms have used Chinese open-source AI models to run automated influence campaigns, with AI creating fake accounts and coordinating political messaging across social media, The New York Times reports. An Iranian network posing as Americans gained nearly 80,000 followers. Israeli firm IntelEye also acknowledged using DeepSeek to operate roughly 1,000 accounts posting both pro- and anti-Netanyahu content, but said it was defensive research rather than an influence campaign.
