Iraq is considering a new oil pipeline through Syria that could cost at least $15 billion and take roughly four years to complete, Reuters reports, as Baghdad looks for alternatives to shipping crude through the Strait of Hormuz. The plan would rely mostly on newly built infrastructure rather than reviving the old Kirkuk-Banias line. It would connect oil fields in northern and southern Iraq to a hub at Haditha, then run through Syria to the Mediterranean port of Banias. The project could be slowed by the need to remove outdated infrastructure and secure new land rights in Syria.
