Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the MTA are backing an $800,000 thermal-energy study at the Chambers Street subway station to test whether excess underground heat can be captured, stored beneath an unused platform and later transferred to nearby buildings during winter. Officials say the system could lower platform temperatures by several degrees while also reducing heating costs at nearby city buildings, including the Dinkins Municipal Building, which currently has a roughly $1.5 million annual heating bill. The city hopes to begin implementing the project in 2027.
