Iranian authorities in Mashhad have ordered jewelers to stop displaying or selling gold and coins bearing the Lion and Sun, the emblem that flew on Iran's flag for generations before the Islamic Revolution. The directive came from the city's jewelers' union on instructions from the police. The Lion and Sun has resurfaced as a leading symbol of the protests against the regime and is closely linked with supporters of exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi. Khomeini had declared in 1979: "The accursed Lion and Sun must be removed from all ministries and offices."
