New inflation data released this morning shows the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge remains stubbornly elevated. The core PCE price index, which excludes food and energy, rose 0.2% in July and 3.3% from a year ago. Overall PCE inflation rose 0.2% for the month and remained at 3.7% year-over-year, slightly hotter than the 3.6% economists expected and still well above the Fed’s 2% target.
